What we need to do now
to stop the black bear trophy hunt

NJ residents:

The only proven way to manage black bears is by proper garbage storage. And in New Jersey, it’s the law.

But the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife refuses to enforce this law.* Instead of ticketing negligent property owners, they allow bears to be lured into human environments by the smell of garbage. And there they kill them—only to use these incidents to justify bear hunting.

Why? Because the Division profits from selling hunting licenses, and they exist solely to manage sport hunting. They have no plan to humanely manage bears.

They think that by sabotaging humane bear management, that they’ll get their hunt. Don’t let them. Please support us today.

Instigating a 2010 bear hunt...

by breaking the garbage control law

NJ Fish & Wildlife:

His mother can’t protect him from a hunter’s bullet.

The problem is NJ Fish & Wildlife
is
more interested in the thrill killing
of hibernating mother bears and
their cubs...than they are in
garbage control.

1. Send letters to the editor to major New Jersey newspapers opposing a bear hunt.

Key points to make when you write:

  1. The Division of Fish & Wildlife (DFW) is a pro-hunting agency that profits from the sale of hunting licenses. They are doing everything they can to sabotage humane bear management efforts.

  1. The only proven way to reduce bear nuisance complaints is by properly storing garbage—this is also the law.

  1. However, the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife refuses to enforce our garbage control law. (In 4 years, only EIGHT violations were written.) By ignoring garbage control, they are in violations of the Black Bear Feeding Ban Law: NJSA 23:2A-14

  1. The Division of Fish & Wildlife’s negligence causes bear incidents to occur...they then use the inflated statistics to justify bear hunting.

  1. The majority of bears killed in the 2005 hunt were hibernating mothers and their cubs. This is a recreational hunt that will do nothing to address the need for public education and garbage control enforcement.

Please tell the governor’s aid:

• In 4 years, NJ Fish & Wildlife has only written EIGHT garbage violations...and is not working with bear country towns to help them implement garbage control.

• They have ignored the hundred of photo documentation of uncontained garbage.

• By refusing to do their job and enforce garbage control, they are breaking the law: the Black Bear Feeding Ban

When you call, ask for Constituent Services. Do not allow them to transfer you to the Division of Fish & Wildlife.
